Acting Strangely
Published in Paperback by Methuen Publishing, Ltd (01 November, 2000)
Author: Martin Jarvis
Average review score:

What's good on the page is even better when the author reads
The virtues of Martin Jarvis's breezy, insightful and well-crafted autobiography have been noticed here and elsewhere. I can report that the pleasure to be derived from it is increased ten fold by listening to Martin Jarvis reading it. The voice is beautifully modulated, and apparently undamaged by forty years of theatre, TV, film and radio work. Not only is the text beautifully read, but there are also many demonstrations of Martin's Jarvis's uncanny ability to mimic and adopt other voices. You'll not only hear what Sir John Gielguid, Sir Alan Ayckbourn and Harold Pinter say, you actually believe they are there, speaking to you. Even the great radio actress Marjorie Westbury, to whom Martin Jarvis pays a high tribute, is somehow heard again in Jarvis's reading. There is also a Polish film director, and a Hollywood agent whose impersonations you will never forget.

Whether you're a theater enthusiast, an admirer of Martin Jarvis's work, a budding actor, or just someone who likes to be amused and entertained, you'll find this audio book set to be a great investment.

Oh so readable
Loved Martin Jarvis's acting stories. It's a lesson to some of us who might have thought, in our dreams, that it's all champagne and roses. This elegant Brit warns that it ain't as easy as he and some of his fellow performers make it look - life on stage and screen can be full of downs as well as ups. Jarvis's sense of adventure makes the book a page-turning treat. His Hollywood tales are nothing short of compelling, not to say hilarious. And I have never read a better account of what it is like to be on stage in some of London's most noted theatres. A beautifully written autobiography, bursting with fun, information and wise thoughts about acting. I recently had a good time in the theatre watching this British star play the title role in the Lloyd Webber/Ayckbourn 'By Jeeves, on its way to Broadway. Look out NYC. Will Jarvis be writing about his adventures on the Great White Way? Hope so.

A witty and wise acting life
This autobiography by versatile British actor Martin Jarvis answers just about every question you've ever wanted to ask concerning the mysteries - and absurdities - of his profession. Whether he is writing about his experiences in Royal National Theatre productions with Sir Peter Hall or the intense atmosphere on the set of James Cameron's Titanic, Jarvis is never less than spellbinding. He is fascinating, too, about the detailed work that has gone into his many starring roles in the plays of Alan Ayckbourn, Harold Pinter and David Hare. And the account of his Theatre Royal Hamlet is a comic classic. His pen portraits of Sir John Gielgud, Robert Duvall, Angela Lansbury, Leonardo di Caprio, Kate Winslet, and the incomparable Dame Judi Dench leap from the page with a glittering perception. I adored the stories about the author's introduction to Hollywood - the character of the hysterical manager, Travis, has to be read to be believed. But beneath the humour, Jarvis' elegant prose conveys an extraordinary sense of the value and worth of being an actor. He is moving, too, as he takes us back to his beginnings at school in South London and his early successes (and failures) at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. I particularly appreciated the tales of student work with Anthony Hopkins, Mike Leigh and Patrick Stewart. This is the best book on the secret world of actors since William Redfield's brilliant 'Letters from an Actor'. I wholeheartedly agree with Dame Judi's assessment, displayed on the cover of this unmissable paperback: "Marvellously written - I laughed and Laughed!"

Adam, Adam What Do You See?
Published in Hardcover by Tommy Nelson (February, 2004)
Author: Bill Martin

Fun Introduction to the Bible
"Adam, Adam, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin is a beginning reader book of Bible stories.

Each two-page spread starts with the title question, only the name is replace with another name. Adam's response is "I see creation all around me." Genesis 2:4-25 is listed as the reference to learn more about Adam.

Other major Bible characters are asked the same question, and they answer uniquely: Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Samson, Ruth, David, Esther, Mary, John, Peter, Paul, a little child, and of course, Jesus, all with corresponding Bible references.

I fully recommend "Adam, Adam, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin as a fun way to introduce your children to your faith.

Outstanding for Sunday School....
As a preschool teacher, of course I'm a huge fan, but this book warmed my soul. I'm so thankful to have this religious book to share with the kids. They will learn the words just like my weekday kids recite Brown Bear... this will make the flannelboard story for Sunday School I have been waiting for! Excellent story by a dedicated Christian! Every young child's class should have this book.

A positive children's book for kids and parents too!
What a beautiful and simple way to tell the Bible stories! I loved this book! If you liked "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see" by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle you will love this one even more. "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see" has been my son's favorite book since he was 6months old, now "Adam, Adam, what do you see" will be my second son's favorite. Bill Martin Jr. has a wonderful way to tell the many stories of the Bible in simple sentences for young readers. I recommend this book to any parent, the children will love the repetition in this book and will learn it word by word.

Adventure Guide to the Leeward Islands: Anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Kitts & Nevis, Antiqua & Barbuda (Serial)

A "must have" guidebook for Leeward Islands
I wish I had met this book before I went to St. Kitts & Nevis for the first time. It tells you everything about them and you can count on it. Very easy to find out what to do, where to go, stay and eat. Very organized and easy to read. Many pictures in this book.

Great book even for returning visitors
I have been traveling to Anguilla for several years but just found some new discoveries in this guidebook.

Great guide to numerous islands
I just returned from a trip to St. Kitts and Nevis and found this book very useful, from the time I was selecting a hotel until I was on the island and looking for a place to eat. Through this guide, I learned about many out of the way spots that were overlooked by other guides. I am looking forward to using other sections of the book on a trip next year to St. Martin and Anguilla.

Alvares Bride

Sandra Marton comes through again!
This is a really good one in the continuing saga of the Barons. It's a wonderful love story that captures the essence of true love between two strong characters. You won't want to put it down till it's done....the story is that compelling.Sandra struck gold here...this will be a worthy addition to your library...guaranteed

Sandra Marton Has come full circle with The Alvares Bride
I was very impressed with "The Alvares Bride." Carin and Rafe's characters were very well balanced, their issues were written out, not implied... The fact that Rafe actually had emotions, and was pained by Carin's words made him very realistic. Carin should have told him of her highly paid Investment broker occupation to his face, instead of just implying that she was more fortunate, etc. I am very satisfied with this book, which is something I haven't felt, despite the fact that I buy most monthly Harlequin Presents. Thank you Sandra Marton,
YC

The Baron saga continues....
This was a great book. Carin and Rafe were great characters, and I loved hearing about Amanda and Nick too. It was a rocky start for Carin and Rafe, but they made it through. Though the book was her sort of usual "girl hates guy, guy hates girl, they fall in love, then get mad at each other" type of book, I still enjoyed it.

A tale of courage and love
When Gregori Rasputin and the Russian Imperial Family are killed in the early 1900's, a conspiracy to take over the Russian throne by the evil monk dies with them. When an American college student accidentally discovers the treasure, he is proclaimed Czar despite his protests. The young man is the focus of one struggle after the other. He becomes the central figure between Russia and the rebel state of Chechnia, Russia and the U.S., and the communist faction that just won't quit. Help comes from the most unexpected source. While the young man wrestles with his desire to return home, he finds courage he didn't know he had, and even discovers the love of his life. The Astrology of Sexuality
Published in Paperback by Red Wheel/Weiser (February, 1992)
Author: Martin Schulman
Average review score:

Very Indepth
Just got it in the mail and I find it to be very informative and accurate to the chart information and placement. I'm really impressed by a book that is nearly 20 years ago and potentially so esoteric being so cogent and chuck full of useful information. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in deeper interpretation of their chart through the placement of their houses. If you don't know the various house placement than you shoudl try a free service like Astrodienst.

Isis Unveiled!
Whoever you are, whatever you think about sex, you are not alone!
Understanding sexual energy is a must for advanced metaphysical students. Astrology gives this mysterious and powerful subject an understanding available from no other perspective. That in itself is reason to devour Schulman's pithy little book.
In this book, you will discover that there are 12 basic approachs to sex ....

The book discusses sexual strengths, weaknesses, desires, aversions, musts and mustnots based on each of the 12 Rising Signs and House Rulerships. You will discover, for example, how your sexual partners experience you during courtship and lovemaking, what you must learn sexually and what you are here to teach, the type of partner that is best for your development, and many other useful pieces of insight and information.
In order to get the most out of the book, you will want to have your own natal chart on hand and be able to interpret it. And in order to get the most out of the in the book, you will want to have your partner's chart nearby as well!

Many of the ills of our society are a direct result of repressed and unhealthy sexual attitudes in America. A true understanding of the information in this book can go a long way toward healing this very dark corner of our culture.

"The Astrology of Sexuality", like the other books in this series, will make a valuable edition to any astrologer's permanent reference library.

Interpretations that never stray from the subject manner
A relatively small book, as most of Schulman's are, but nevertheless a great resource of information. The book is set up in "cookbook" [I hate that term] form based on the signs that are on the cusp of the houses of a chart, ie. "Leo 3rd House -- Aquarius 9th house". Each interpretation is about a page and a half long and offers keywords at the end of each section, ie. "romantic to a fault, teaches partner the idea of devotion." If you are a beginner, I suggest to first obtain the birth chart rather than just knowing the positions of the planets or the signs [which will not help you since this book deals nothing with the planets or aspects]. Has sample chart delineations of personalities such as Hugh Hefner, etc. in the back of the book that are helpful in the interpretation process. All in all, it's a well-thought out book that should be of great help to anyone interested in the astrological approach to sex and relationships.

At the Edge of All Things: In Search of Labrador
Published in Hardcover by Stoddart Pub (April, 1995)
Author: Rick Hornung
Average review score:

Fast-paced, totally engrossing
This vivid look at life on the edge--about an inventive outlaw in remotest Labrador, a place in fact known as the edge of all things--reads like an excellent novel, with its assured, complex characterization and adventurous storyline. But this book is based on a true account of a couple's perilous chase by snowmobile across the subarctic Canadian barrens in pursuit of thugs who have just made an attempt on their lives. The man, a half Montagnais half Naskapi, has turned to smuggling as a way to make a living in the midst of North American society that has skewed values and despoiled his land; now at great risk, he must protect his interests. Rick Hornung tells his deeply distressing story with exhilarating skill.

An unusual and thrilling adventure story
In sparse and elegant prose, Hornung takes his reader through the harsh and jagged twists of an unforgiving land. By telling the story of a man who casts himself out of his homeland and into an underworld of smugglers, this book provides a unique perspective on life in the remote areas of North America. When following Martin Rouleau's journey, the reader will travel into the cracks that are etched into the rocks of Canada -- the rifts between whites and aboriginals, the fissures amongst different aboriginal communities, the tensions between French and English speaking Canadians. This is a fascinating book; and, it's a must read for anyone interested in the survival of aboriginals living in the northern climate.

An enlightening journey to rock and heart
The cognitive title, AT THE EDGE OF ALL THINGS, plunges the reader onto an undeniable trail. The book itself is beautious to hold with no detail overlooked -- including typesetting, cover design and binding. But the true beauty is found in Rick Hornung's fascinating narrative as he navigates through unfamiliar territory on a quest for understanding the black-market life of Martin Rouleau. Hornung artfully makes his journey and Martin's journey our own journey, taking his readers far beyond the backyard, and into the weathered rock and heart of Labrador.

Atlas of the Arab-Israeli Conflict
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (August, 1994)
Author: Martin Gilbert
Average review score:

Incredible Resource About the Arab-Israeli Conflict
The Arab-Israeli conflict is a fiercely debated topic with numerous accusations constantly being thrown back and forth. For someone just beginning to study the Arab-Israeli conflict, it can be overwhelming. This book is a collection of maps drafted by a professional cartographer to show the real dimensions of treaties, ceasefires, boycotts, and other historical moments in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Would you like to know exactly which land the Oslo Agreements included?

Would you like to know which parts of the Middle East belonged to biblical Israel?

Would you like to know which parts of Britain's Palestine Mandate they forbid Jews to dwell or buy land on?

This resource can answer all those question and more graphically showing you the exact boundaries of, countries involved in, and other important aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict. I particularly found this resource helpful in disputing allegations by people that "such-and such a percentage" of the land was to be given up in a treaty such as the original U.N. plan for Palestine or under the Oslo Agreements. After showing my fellow debater the actual maps, the arguments were ended since I was in possession of hard fact thanks to this fine reference book.

Sir Martin Gilbert is a well-acclaimed British scholar, who has written numerous titles in the Historical Atlas series, extensively written about the Arab-Israeli conflict, and was also officially appointed to write the biography of Sir Winston Churchill.

I have reviewed the 1984 Fourth Edition, but several editions have since come out with updated information and additional maps to reflect more recent developments. I recommend getting the most recent edition available.

I highly recommend this outstanding resource for anyone studying the Arab-Israeli conflict, whether pro-Arab or pro-Israeli.

Review by: Maximillian Ben Hanan

An indispensable sourcebook
Professor Gilbert may know more about this subject than any other scholar, and despite some inherent difficulties has reconstructed geographical areas with great precision. Even those who disagree with his views (occasionally expressed in the explanatory captions) must acknowledge the consumate scholarship underlying his maps--which have no "attitudes," only facts.

Great Book, Very Worthwhile
Very informative. Gives a good understanding of the conflict by one of the best historians alive right now. Buy it.

Atlas of World War I
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (March, 1999)
Author: Martin Gilbert
Average review score:

An Excellent companion
This is a terrific companion for anyone reading about World War One. The pages are filled with greatly detailed maps and footnotes that illuminate actions of armies, front line positions, withdrawls, alliances etc...
A valuable tool to reference to when reading a book that may not be mapped or with few or poorly drawn maps.

Atlas of World War I
Martin Gilbert describes his Atlas of World War One as an "introductory guide" but the reader will come away with much more than a mere introduction to the Great War. Gilbert uses 164 maps to illustrate virtually every aspect of the war from the first shots to the middle east to Africa to the final lines of the Versailles treaty. It even has maps of unfought campaigns of 1919.

Gilbert clearly has a thorough understanding of his subject and knows what makes for an effective war atlas. Color maps would have been more aesthetically pleasing, but something must remain for the eventual third edition. This book virtually eliminates any need for another rival atlas to be compiled, and any serious scholar of the war should endeavor to purchase this fine volume.

Absolutely indispensable
Whether you are a historical dabbler or a veteran, this book of maps and charts in exceptionally useful in deciphering the wordy mash that so many of the histories become. Keep it handy when reading any WW1 book.
